Journalist Hana Meihan Davis comes from a long line of democracy activists in Hong Kong. Today, they are either in exile or facing arrest.
Hong Kong, once a bastion of liberty and free speech, is now under the control of a repressive Chinese regime determined to silence dissent. In this searing, deeply personal memoir, Davis takes readers into the heart of her city that has come under siege -- and tells the astounding stories of the brave individuals who are resisting tyranny in a life-or-death struggle for freedom.

PRAISE
"With an architect’s eye for detail, a journalist’s gift for narrative, and the passion of a native daughter, Hana Meihan Davis explores the meaning of Hong Kong identity for today’s generation. Written in the wake of the 2020 National Security Law and the 2021 electoral reforms, For the Love of Hong Kong is at once an intimate family story and a glimpse into the city’s pro-democracy movement. With this book Davis aims to give Hong Kong a voice, her chronicle an act of memory against forgetting."
-- Denise Y. Ho, Assistant Professor of History, Yale University
"Hana Meihan Davis's memoir is a poignant love letter to Hong Kong, suffused with longing for a home that no longer exists. She grew up surrounded by the political giants of Hong Kong's democracy movement, with parents who spent years preparing her for the moment when Beijing would assert its authoritarian impulses over Hong Kong. 'Writing about Hong Kong is like writing an obituary for yourself,' was her mother's warning. Yet the very existence of this book serves as a reminder of Hong Kongers' stubborn embrace of democratic ideals and free speech, no matter the cost."
-- Louisa Lim, 'Author of 'The People's Republic of Amnesia; Tiananmen Revisited'
"Hana Meihan Davis provides an incredible front row seat on Hong Kong’s recent political history as someone born months after the handover. Her relationship with several of the main actors shares a unique personal take on how the democracy movement in Hong Kong evolved, and why it’s important to the world."
-- Nathan Kwun-chung Law, Hong Kong activist
"Hana Meihan Davis takes your hand and introduces you to her defiant and dying Hong Kong, a city built by refugees under British rule with the clock ticking on its return to China. One of the world’s great financial centers, Hong Kong’s success was built by its 7 million people on the treaty promises of “One country, two systems” and “Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong.” As the chokehold from the Chinese Community Party tightened, millions of Hong Kong people showed the world their values by taking to the streets in support of freedom. This book beautifully captures what is being lost as China’s rulers crush dissent and impose their system on Hong Kong’s once-free society."
